Halpern viszont kiesett (kb) januárig, ami nem túl jó jel. tehát még1szer: védő kell! az egyetlen igazi, nhl-szinten is jegyzett emberünk hátul Boyle, ő viszont kifejezetten támadó bekk, azaz nem egy takarító típus/alkat. Picard és Ranger megfelelő zöldfülüek, van bennük potenciál. Lukowich kicsit elszürkült, de azért még elfogadható. Kuba, Janik és O'Brian pedig egyelőre elég erőtlenek - utóbbi fiatalság bolondság alapon igen sok felelőtlen szabálytalanságot követett el idén is, aminek következtében nem egy meccset buktunk el az utolsó percekben. na mindegy, a lényeg, h helyünk nem nagyon van a sapi alatt, tehát (vezéráldozat nélkül) semmi komoly igazolásra nem számíthatunk. abban pedig csak bízhatunk, h nem leszünk olyan pechesek, mint legutóbb. ha megint kidőlnek ennyien, akkor hasonló eredményre számíthatunk... a fő baj pedig az, h nekünk tökéletesen szar, pontosabban nincs utánpótlásunk. a farmcsapataink minden évben az utolsók közt vannak, nincsenek jó felfedezettjeink, nincs megfelelő stábunk a reménységek felkutatására stb. ez pedig nem is fog megváltozni egyik percről a másikra. hiába no, fiatal csapat vagyunk. nagyon fiatal... Na azért erre a Stamkos gyerekre már nagyon kíváncsi vagyok, meg jó lenne még húzni egy jó playát még a második-harmadik körben. Bár Lidstrom és Zetterberg példája alapján tök mindegy, honnan húzunk. " As was reported in the paper today, Torts is out as head coach. Not a shock. I have a tremendous amount of respect for John Tortorella as a person and as a coach. He is the only head coach that I have worked directly with since I took over this beat at the start of the 2001-02 season. I admire his honesty. I love his passion. I think he is one of the top coaches in the game right now and he won’t have any problems finding another position, if he hasn’t already. He is going to be missed around here. He is a great salesman for the game (even though he would never want to admit to that or want to assume that role) and his charity work, especially with kids, is as good as it gets. But I also think, as he admitted when he told Jay Feaster back in April, that the locker room needs a new voice. I wish John nothing but the best in his next stop, wherever it may lead him. This is also what I was able to surmise from conversations last night. Barry Melrose is not a done deal. No definitive offers have been made to anybody and the team is still talking to other candidates. And to clarify one other thing, no deal with Melrose, or anybody else for that matter, can be done anytime soon, and certainly not in the next couple of days. Oren Koules and his group were told by the executive board of the NHL the other day that the only issues that can be dealt with right now are those of a time sensitive manner. A head coach, is not a time sensitive matter. Nothing can be done until the board of governors meeting on June 17 in New York. So even if a deal was in place, it certainly couldn’t be announced. Now my reaction to the Melrose news is the same as many of you guys. I’m not sold on a coach who has been behind a television camera the past 13 years, and not behind a bench. I also can’t believe that if this were to be true, that Melrose will command a $2 million annual salary - NHL coaches not named Scotty Bowman don’t make that kind of money. When Torts signed his extension before the 2005-06 season, he was one of the highest paid coaches in the league - his salary for this coming season, $1.3 million. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what transpires in the coming weeks, but changes are definitely in store. And what does this all mean for Jay Feaster? My guess is he won’t be the GM after the ownership change, but that he will stay with the organization in some capacity. He’s too intelligent about the CBA and is too strong of a spokesperson for the team and salesman of the game. It wouldn’t be a surprise that whomever takes over the president role - possibly Len Barrie? - will also be the GM, but in title only as Koules will likely be the one calling all the shots. I’ll leave you with this note as well. Some other tidbits that came out of conversations last night - a contract extension with D Alex Picard has already been reached (again, these can’t be announced until Koules is officially in charge), an entry level deal has been reached with D Kevin Quick, a deal for Ryan Craig is nearly complete and talks with Vinny Lecavalier are on-going and would have progressed further except that Vinny’s agent, Kent Hughes, is also the agent for Luc Bourdon, the Vancover defensman who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on Thursday. And though talks with Chris Gratton have not officially begun, it sounds like it won’t be any kind of an issue. There’s even talk of Steven Stamkos living with Chris and his family next season. "

For more than a month, speculation has centered on ESPN commentator and former Los Angeles Kings coach Barry Melrose as a replacement if Tortorella does not coach Tampa Bay in the final season of his contract. The Toronto Star reported Friday that Melrose will be paid $2 million annually. Melrose, who has worked at ESPN since 1996 and last coached in the NHL in 1995, gave a soft denial Friday during an appearance on ESPN's "SportsCenter." "This is no different than any of the last 10 years," said Melrose, who was seen in Koules' company Monday in Detroit during the Stanley Cup finals. "I've been contacted by a handful of clubs every year since joining ESPN. My desire to coach again has never been a secret, but I love what I do at ESPN. ... I want to coach again in the NHL. But nothing's going on. Uh, I work for ESPN and I'm very happy working for ESPN." Tortorella, who replaced Steve Ludzik as Lightning coach in 2001 and guided the team to a Stanley Cup championship in 2004, declined to comment through a team spokesman Friday. At the end of this past season, Tortorella discussed the possibility of stepping down with General Manager Jay Feaster after the Lightning failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Feaster rejected the notion, and Tortorella, the all-time leader in NHL victories among American-born coaches, went on to coach Team USA in the World Hockey Championships. Tortorella later expressed his desire to return to the Lightning. In six seasons with Tampa Bay, Tortorella's record is 227-195-35 with 35 ties. The team made the playoffs in his second season, won the Cup in his third and suffered first-round exits in 2005-06 and 2006-07. He has one year remaining on his contract at $1.3 million. Koules is a movie and TV producer who lives in Southern California. His purchasing group, OK Hockey, is expected to gain final approval from the NHL's board of governors during a June 18 meeting in New York. Until then, any major personnel changes within the Lightning hierarchy are on hold. "In directing the hockey operations department, we have been asked by both Palace Sports & Entertainment and OK Hockey that unless a hockey operations issue is time-sensitive or deadline-sensitive, all items be deferred until after the closing of the sale of the franchise," Feaster said in a statement released by the team. "Inasmuch as John Tortorella is under contract to be the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 2008-09 season, this is not necessarily a time-sensitive issue." Discussion of Melrose taking over from Tortorella first was raised publicly more than a month ago during an intermission report of a CBC broadcast of Canadiens-Flyers game. Al Strachan of Sun Media in Canada reported then that Melrose would replace Tortorella once Koules takes ownership. A report in Wednesday's Ottawa Sun speculated that Melrose would sign a three-year, $6 million contract with the Lightning when Koules takes over. Melrose, 51, is best known for his "mullet" hairstyle and as ESPN's primary hockey analyst. He played 300 games in the NHL as a defenseman, with stops in Winnipeg, Toronto and Detroit. He began his coaching career after retiring as a player in 1987. He guided the Medicine Hat Tigers to a Western Hockey League championship in his first season as a coach. The Kelvington, Saskatchewan, native then coached the Seattle Thunderbirds and the Adirondack Red Wings, winning the American Hockey League championship with Adirondack in 1992. The first thing they'll talk about in the new city is how he led the Lightning to the Stanley Cup in 2004. He didn't have the players or the goalie he wanted, and the ownership mess left him with a paralyzed front office that couldn't provide the type of team he needs. It couldn't work like this. The question is, can it work like this? Oren Koules is about to make his splash as the Bolts' new owner by firing the best coach the franchise ever had. But replacing him with Barry Melrose, a guy who has been on television - out of coaching - since the mid-1990s? Gentlemen, start your head-scratching. That's what the buzz is, anyway. He coached the Los Angeles Kings to the Stanley Cup finals in 1993 - the same season the Lightning began play - but he was gone two seasons later and hasn't been behind a bench since. He's well-known through his work on ESPN, but if this is the guy he better bring more than good sound bites and nice hair. These Bolts have fallen into disrepair, mostly through front-office mistakes and their eternal, unfilled quest to find a goalie capable of replacing Nik Khabibulin. They'll catch a break by drafting exciting young talent Steven Stamkos with the first pick in the upcoming draft, but this team was 31-42-9 last season with Vinny Lecavalier and Marty St. Louis. Tortorella didn't get dumber all of a sudden, but he also couldn't find the answers. You can say he was impatient with his goalies, but no one in the conga line that has followed Khabibulin has been good enough to run out there on a nightly basis anyway. He tried everything. He pushed, he backed off. He bellowed, he mellowed. He ripped his players, he defended them. Nothing worked. Even with the impending arrival of Stamkos, I'm not sure Torts has patience for the kind of rebuilding job that lays ahead for this team. But some other team in another city is about to get extremely lucky. Coaches like this don't come available too often. It's all anyone should care about. It's what they'll care about in whichever new city Torts calls home. Perhaps one day we'll rediscover what that feels like here. That day seems a long way off though. Longer today than the day before.
